How to disable the Firefox plugin warning

this bogus msg has been disturbing me , a while so i need to do solve the problem..
this is what i came up with ?

So here is how to disable this message

1. Type about:config in the address bar
2. Search for plugin.default_plugin_disabled by typing it into the filter text box.
3. Set the value to false by double-clicking on the text (or you can right click on the line and click toggle)
4. Restart Firefox

Exiting Windows the Cool and Quick Way
--------------------------------------

Normally it takes a hell lot of time just Shutting down Windows, you have to move your mouse to the Start Button, click on it, move it again over Shut Down, click, then move it over the necessary option and click, then move the cursor over the OK button and once again (you guessed it) click.This whole process can be shortened by creating shortcuts on the Desktop which will shut down Windows at the click of a button. Start by creating a new shortcut( right click and select New> Shortcut). Then in the command line box, type (without the quotes.)

'C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindowsexec'

This Shortcut on clicking will restart Windows immediately without any Warning. To create a Shortcut to Restarting Windows, type the following in the Command Line box:

'c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows'

This Shortcut on clicking will shut down Windows immediately without any Warning.

Ban Shutdowns : A trick to Play on Lamers
-----------------------------------------

This is a neat trick you can play on that lamer that has a huge ego, in this section I teach you, how to disable the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Dialog Box. This trick involves editing the registry, so please make backups. Launch regedit.exe and go to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane look for the NoClose Key. If it is not already there then create it by right clicking in the right pane and selecting New > String Value.(Name it NoCloseKey ) Now once you see the NoCloseKey in the right pane, right click on it and select Modify. Then Type 1 in the Value Data Box.

Doing the above on a Win98 system disables the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Dialog Box. But on a Win95 machine if the value of NoCloseKey is set to 1 then click on the Start > Shut Down button displays the following error message:

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

You can enable the shut down option by changing the value of NoCloseKey to 0 or simply deleting the particular entry i.e. deleting NoCloseKey.

Instead of performing the above difficult to remember process, simply save the following with an extension of .reg and add it's contents to the registry by double clicking on it.

Disabling Display of Drives in My Computer

To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer go to :

Take Over the Screen Saver
--------------------------

To activate and deactivate the screen saver whenever you want, goto the following registry key:

Now add a new string value and name it Mouse Corners. Edit this new value to -Y-N. Press F5 to refresh the registry. Voila! Now you can activate your screensaver by simply placing the mouse cursor at the top right corner of the screen and if you take the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, the screensaver will deactivate.

Pop a banner each time Windows Boots
------------------------------------

To pop a banner which can contain any message you want to display just before a user is going to log on, go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

Now create a new string Value in the right pane named LegalNoticeCaption and enter the value that you want to see in the Menu Bar. Now create yet another new string value and name it: LegalNoticeText. Modify it and insert the message you want to display each time Windows boots. This can be effectively used to display the company's private policy each time the user logs on to his NT box. It's .reg file would be:

Delete the Tips of the Day to save 5KB
--------------------------------------

Windows 95 had these tips of the day which appeared on a system running a newly installed Windows OS. These tips of the day are stored in the Windows Registry and consume 5K of space. For those of you who are really concerned about how much free space your hard disk has, I have the perfect trick.

To save 5K go to the following key in Regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Tips

Now simply delete these tricks by selecting and pressing the DEL key.

Change the Default Locations
----------------------------

To change the default drive or path where Windows will look for it's installation files, go to the key:

Now you can edit as you wish.

Secure your Desktop Icons and Settings
--------------------------------------

You can save your desktop settings and secure it from your nerdy friend by playing with the registry. Simply launch the Registry Editor go to:

In the right pane create a new DWORD Value named NoSaveSettings and modify it's value to 1. Refresh and restart for the settings to get saved.

CLSID Folders Explained
-----------------------

Don't you just hate those stubborn stupid icons that refuse to leave the desktop, like the Network Neighborhood icon. I am sure you want to know how you can delete them. You may say, that is really simple, simply right click on the concerned icon and select Delete. Well not exactly, you see when you right click on these special folders( see entire list below)neither the rename nor the delete option does not appear. To delete these folders, there are two methods, the first one is using the System Policy Editor(Poledit in the Windows installation CD)and the second is using the Registry.

Before we go on, you need to understand what CLSID values are. These folders, like the Control Panel, Inbox, The Microsoft Network, Dial Up Networking etc are system folders. Each system folder has a unique CLSID key or the Class ID which is a 16-byte value which identifies an individual object that points to a corresponding key in the registry.

To delete these system Folders from the desktop simply go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\Namespace{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}

To delete an icon simply delete the 16 byte CLSID value within "NameSpace". The following are the CLSID values of the most commonly used icons:

For example, to delete the Recycle Bin, first note down it's CLSID value, which is: 645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E. Now go to the Namespace key in the registry and delete the corresponding key.

Similarly to delete the History folder, delete the following key:

How to hide all icons from the Desktop
--------------------------------------

Go to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane create a new DWORD value by the name: NoDesktop and set its value to: 1. Reboot and you will find no icons on the desktop.

Till now you simply learnt how to delete the special system folders by deleting a registry key, but the hack would have been better if there was a way of adding the DELETE and RENAME option to the right click context menus of these special folders. You can actually change the right click context menu of any system folder and add any of the following options: RENAME, DELETE, CUT, COPY, PASTE and lots more.

This hack too requires you to know the CLSID value of the system folder whose menu you want to customize. In this section, I have taken up Recycle Bin as the folder whose context menu I am going to edit.

Firstly launch the registry editor and open the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder.

In Case you want to edit some other folder like say the FONTS folder, then you will open the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CLSID VALUE HERE}\ShellFolder.

In the right pane there will be a DWORD value names attributes. Now consider the following options:

1. To add the Rename option to the menu, change the value of Attributes to

50 01 00 20
2. To add the Delete option to the menu, change the value of Attributes to

60 01 00 20

3. To add both the Rename & Delete options to the menu, change the value of Attributes to 70,01,00,20

4. Add Copy to the menu, change Attributes to 41 01 00 20

5. Add Cut to the menu, change Attributes to 42 01 00 20

6. Add Copy & Cut to the menu, change Attributes to 43 01 00 20

7. Add Paste to the menu, change Attributes to 44 01 00 20

8. Add Copy & Paste to the menu, change Attributes to 45 01 00 20

9. Add Cut & Paste to the menu, change Attributes to 46 01 00 20

10.Add all Cut, Copy & Paste to the menu, change Attributes to 47 01 00 20

We want to add only the Rename option to the right click context menu of the Recycle Bin, so change the value of attributes to: 50 01 00 20. Press F5 to refresh and then after rebooting you will find that when you right click on the Recycle Bin a RENAME option pops up too.

To reset the default Windows options change the value of Attributes back to

40 01 00 20

The Registry File which one can create for the above process would be something like the below:

To access say the Modem Properties in the Control Panel Folder, the normal procedure is: Click on Start, Click on Settings> Control Panel and then wait for the Control Panel window to pop up and then ultimately click on the Modems icon.

Wouldn't it be lovely if you could shorten the process to: Click on Start> Control Panel>Modems. Yes you can add the Control Panel and also all other Special System Folders directly to the first level Start Menu. Firstly collect the CLSID value of the folder you want to add to the start menu. I want to add Control Panel hence the CLSID value is: 21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D

Now right click on the Start Button and select Open. Now create a new folder and name it: Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

NOTE: Do not forget the period after the 'l' in Panel. Similarly all system folders can be added to the Start Menu.(accept My Briefcase, I think)

Deleting System Options from the Start menu

You can actually remove the Find and Run options from the start menu by performing a simple registry hack. Again like always Launch the registry editor and scroll down to the below key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it NoFind.(To remove the RUN option name it NoRun). Double-click the newly create DWORD to edit it's value and enter 1 as its value. This will disable the FIND option of the Start Menu and will also disable the default Shortcut key(F3 for Find.)

To restore the Run or find command modify the value of the DWORD to 0 or simply Delete the DWORD value.

Fed Up of the boring Old Yellow Folder Icons?[Drive Icons Included]

NOTE: This trick hasn't been tried on Win98.

You can easily change the boring yellow folder icons to your own personalized icons. Simply create a text file and copy the following lines into it:

[.ShellClassInfo]

ICONFILE=Drive:\Path\Icon_name.extension

Save this text file by the name, desktop.ini in the folder, whose icon you want to change. Now to prevent this file from getting deleted change it's attributes to Hidden and Read Only by using the ATTRIB command.

To change the icon of a drive, create a text file containing the following lines:

[Autorun]

ICON=Drive:\Path\Icon_name.extension

Save this file in the root of the drive whose icon you want to change and name it autorun.inf For Example, if you want to change the icon of a floppy, SAVE THE icon in a:\icon_name.ico One can also create a kewl icon for the Hard Disk and create a text file [autorun.inf] and store it in "c:\".

Securing NT

By default, NT 4.0 displays the last person who logged onto the system. This can be considered to be a security threat, especially in the case of those who choose their password to be same as their Username. To disable this bug which actually is a feature, go to the following key in the registry editor:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click and select the ReportBookOK item and create a new string value called DontDisplayLastUserName. Modify it and set it's value to 1.

As a system administrator, you can ensure that the passwords chosen by the users are not too lame or too easy to guess. NT has this lovely utility called the User Manager which allows the administrator to set the age limit of the password which forces the users to change the password after a certain number of days. You can also set the minimum length of passwords and prevent users to use passwords which already have been used earlier and also enable account lockouts which will deactivate an account after a specified number of failed login attempts.

When you log on to Win NT, you should disable Password Caching, this ensures Single NT Domain login and also prevents secondary Windows Logon screen.

Simply copy the following lines to a plain text ASCII editor like: Notepad and save it with an extension, .reg

Cleaning Recent Docs Menu and the RUN MRU

The Recent Docs menu can be easily disabled by editing the Registry. To do this go to the following Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane, create a new DWORD value by the name: NoRecentDocsMenu and set it's value to 1. Restart Explorer to save the changes.

You can also clear the RUN MRU history. All the listings are stored in the key:

HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

You can delete individual listings or the entire listing. To delete History of Find listings go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU

and delete.

Customizing the Right Click Context Menu of the Start Menu

When you right click on the start menu, only 3 options pop up: Open, Explore, and Find. You can add your own programs to this pop up menu( which comes up when we right click on it.) Open Regedit and go to the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell

Right click on the shell and create a new Sub Key (You can create a new SubKey by right clicking on the Shell Key and selecting New > Key.). Type in the name of the application you want to add to the start menu. I want to add Notepad to the Start Menu and hence I name this new sub key, Notepad. Now right click on the new registry key that you just created and create yet another new key named Command. Enter the full path of the application, in this case Notepad in the default value of Command in the right

pane. So I Modify the value of the default string value and enter the full pathname of Notepad:

c:\wndows\notepad.exe.

Now press F5 to refresh. Now if you right click on the Start Button you will find a new addition to the Pop Up Menu called Notepad. Clicking on it will launch Notepad.

We can not only add but also remove the existing options in this pop up box.

To delete the Find option, go to the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell\Find

Delete Find. DO NOT delete Open else you will not be able to open any folders in the Start Menu like Programs, Accessories etc.

BMP Thumbnail As Icon

You can actually change the default BMP icon to a thumbnail version of the actual BMP file. To do this simply go to HKCU\Paint.Picture\Default. In the right pane change the value of default to %1. Please note however that this will slow down the display rate in explorer if there are too many BMP thumbnails to display. You can use other icons too, simply enter the pathname.To restore back to the normal change the vale of default back to: C:\Progra~1\Access~1\MSPAINT.EXE,1.

Customizing The Shortcut Arrow

All shortcuts have a tiny black arrow attached to it's icon to distinguish from normal files. This arrow can sometimes be pretty annoying and as a Hacker should know how to change each and everything, here goes another trick. Launch the Registry Editor and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons.

Now, on the right pane is a list of icons ( we found out that on some systems, Windows 98 especially, the right pane is blank. Don't worry, just add the value as required ). Find the value 29. If it isn't there, just add it. The value of this string should be C:\Windows\system\shell32.dll, 29 ( which means the 30th icon in shell32.dll - the first one begins with 0 ). Now, we need blank icon to do this. Just create one with white as the whole icon. Go here to learn how to create an icon. Once done just change the value to C:\xxx.ico, 0 where "xxx" is the full path of the icon file and "0" is the icon in it.

Now for some fun. If the blank icon is a bit boring, change it again. You will find that under shell32.dll there is a gear icon, a shared folder ( the hand ) and much more. Experiment for yourself!

Resizable Full Screen Toolbar

The Full Screen option increases the viewable area and makes surfing more enjoyable but sometimes we need the Toolbar but also need to have extra viewing area. Now this hack teaches you how to change the size of the Internet Explorer toolbar. This registry hack is a bit complicated as it involves Binary values, so to make it simple, I have included the following registry file which will enable the resizable option of the Internet Explorer toolbar which was present in the beta version of IE.

Making the Internet Explorer & the Explorer Toolbars Fancy

Change Internet Explorer's Caption

Don't like the caption of Internet Explorer caption? Want to change it? Open the registry editor and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.

In the right pane create a new String Value names Window Title (Note the space between Window and Title). Right click on this newly created String Value and select Modify. Type in the new caption you want to be displayed. Restart for the settings to take place.

Don't like the boring background colors of Outlook Express? To change it launch the Windows Registry Editor and scroll down to the

On the left pane, click on ColorCycle or select Edit and Modify in the menu. Now change the value to 1. Close and restart. Now, launch Outlook Express and whenever you open up a New Message, hold down ctrl-shift and tap the z key to scroll to change the background color. Repeat the keystroke to cycle through the colors.

Internet Explorer 5 Hidden Features

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 has several hidden features which can be controlled using the Windows Registry. Open your registry and scroll down to the following key:

Create a new DWORD value named x(See complete list of values of x below) and modify it's value to 1 to enable it and to 0 to disable it.

NoBrowserOptions : Disable the Tools / Internet Options menu.

NoBrowserSaveAs : Disable the ability to Save As.

NoFavorites : Disable the Favorites.

NoFileNew : Disable the File / New command.

NoFileOpen : Disable the File / Open command.

NoFindFiles : Disable the Find Files command.

NoSelectDownloadDir : Disable the option of selecting a download directory.

NoTheaterMode : Disable the Full Screen view option.

Hacking Secrets

Almost all system administrators make certain changes and make the system restricted. System Administrators can hide the RUN option, the FIND command, the entire Control Panel, drives in My Computer like D: A: etc. They can even restrict activities of a hacker my disabling or hiding, even the tiniest options or tools.

Most commonly these restrictions are imposed locally and are controlled by the Windows Registry. But sometimes the smart system administrators control the activities of the hacker by imposing restrictions remotely through the main server.

Poledit or Policy Editor is a small kewl tool which is being commonly used by system administrators to alter the settings of a system. This utility is not installed by default by Windows. You need to install in manually from the Windows 98 Installation Kit from the Resource Kit folder. user.dat file that we saw earlier.

The Policy Editor tool imposes restrictions on the user's system by editing the user.dat file which in turn means that it edits the Windows Registry to change the settings. It can be used to control or restrict access to each and every folder and option you could ever think of. It has the power to even restrict access to individual folders, files, the Control Panel, MS DOS, the drives available etc. Sometimes this software does make life really hard for a Hacker. So how can we remove the restrictions imposed by the Policy Editor? Well read ahead to learn more.

You see the Policy Editor is not the only way to restrict a user's activities. As we already know that the Policy Editor edits the Windows Registry(user.dat) file to impose such restrictions. So this in turn would mean that we can directly make changes to the Windows Registry using a .reg file or directly to remove or add restrictions.

Launch Regedit and go to the following Registry Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies

Under this key, there will definitely be a key named explorer. Now under this explorer key we can create new DWORD values and modify it's value to 1 in order to impose the restriction. If you want to remove the Restriction, then you can simply delete the respective DWORD values or instead change their values to 0. The following is a list of DWORD values that can be created under the Explorer Key-:

NoRealMode: Disable Single-Mode MS-DOS.

So you see if you have access to the Windows Registry, then you can easily create new DWORD values and set heir value to 1 for enabling the particular option and 0 for disabling the particular option. But Sometimes, access to the Windows Registry is blocked. So what do you do? Go to the Windows Directory and delete either user.dat or system.dat (These 2 files constitute the Windows Registry.) and reboot. As soon as Windows logs in, it will display a Warning Message informing you about an error in the Windows Registry. Simply ignore this Warning Message and Press CTRL+DEL+ALT to get out of this warning message.(Do not press OK) You will find that all restrictions have been removed.

The most kind of restriction found quite commonly is the Specific Folder Restriction, in which users are not allowed access to specific folders, the most common being the Windows folder, or sometimes even access to My Computer is blocked. In effect, you simply cannot seem to access the important kewl files which are needed by you to do remove restrictions. What do you? Well use the RUN command. (START >RUN). But unfortunately a system administrator who is intelligent enough to block access to specific folder, would definitely have blocked access to the RUN command. Again we are stuck.

Windows is supposed to be the most User Friendly Operating System on earth. (At least Microsoft Says so.)

It gives the User an option to do the same thing in various ways. You see the RUN command is only the most convenient option of launching applications, but not the only way. In Windows you can create shortcuts to almost anything from a file, folder to a Web URL. So say your system administrator has blocked access to the c:\windows\system folder and you need to access it. What do you do? Simply create a Shortcut to it. To do this right click anywhere on the desktop and select New > Shortcut. A new window titled Create Shortcut pops up. Type in the path of the restricted folder you wish to access, in this case c:\windows\system. Click Next, Enter the friendly name of the Shortcut and then click Finish. Now you can access the restricted folder by simply double clicking on the shortcut icon. Well that shows how protected and secure *ahem Windows *ahem is.

HACKING TRUTH: Sometimes when you try to delete a file or a folder, Windows displays an error message saying that the file is protected. This simply means that the file is write protected, or in other words the R option is +. Get it? Anyway, you can stop Windows from displaying this error message and straightaway delete this file by changing its attributes to Non Read Only. This can be done by Right Clicking on the file, selecting Properties and then

unselecting the Read Only Option.

There is yet another way of accessing restricted folders. Use see, DOS has a lovely command known as START. Its general syntax is:

START application_path

It does do what it seems to do, start applications. So in you have access to DOS then you can type in the START command to get access to the restricted folder. Now mostly access to DOS too would be blocked. So again you can use the shortcut trick to launch, c:\command.com or c:\windows\command.com. (Command.com is the file which launches MS DOS).

Accessing Restricted Drives.

The problem with most system administrators is that they think that the users or Hackers too are stupid. Almost all system administrators use the Registry Trick (Explained Earlier) to hide all drives in My Computer. So in order to unhide or display all drives, simply delete that particular key.(Refer to beginning of Untold Secrets Section.)

Some systems have the floppy disk disabled through the BIOS. On those systems if the BIOS is protected, you may need to crack the BIOS password. (For that Refer to the Windows Hacking Chapter). Sometimes making drives readable (Removing R +) and then creating Shortcuts to them also helps us to get access to them.

Further Changing your Operating System's Looks by editing .htt files

If you have installed Windows Desktop Update and have the view as Web Page option enabled, you can customise the way the folder looks by selecting View > Customise this folder. Here you can change the background and other things about that particular folder. Well that is pretty lame, right? We hackers already know things as lame as that. Read on for some kewl stuff.

Well, you could also change the default that is stored in a Hidden HTML Template file (I think so..) which is nothing but a HTML document with a .htt extension. This .htt file is found at: %systemroot%\web\folder.htt.

The %systemroot% stands for the drive in which Windows is Installed, which is normally C:

You can edit these .htt files almost just like you edit normal .HTM or .HTML files. Simply open them in an ASCII editor like Notepad. The following is a list of .htt files on your system which control various folders and which can be edited to customise the way various folders look.

safemode.htt Safe Mode

All these files are found in the web folder in %systemfolder%. The folder.htt file has a line:

'Here's a good place to add a few lines of your own"

which is the place where you can add your own A HREF links. These links would then appear in the folder whose folder.htt file you edited. All this might sound really easy and simple, but you see these .htt files do not contain normal HTML code, instead they contain a mixture of HTML and web bots. Hence they can be difficult for newbies to understand.

How to make folder backgrounds in WinXP

First you need to make a folder within whatever folder you want a background image, and name this folder Folder Settings. Inside it, place any Bitmap (.bmp) image you want to use as the background, and name it Background. Remember, it has to be a Bitmap image!

Recently i have been ask from a private company to reset their sql coz they sys admin left the company without any further notice hehe.....poor management.... hehe.. here is wat i did..

1. Log on to your system as Administrator.

2. Stop the MySQL server if it is running. For a server that is running as a Windows service, go to the Services manager:

Then find the MySQL service in the list, and stop it.
If your server is not running as a service, you may need to use the Task Manager to force it to stop.

Simple explanation on arp poisoning

First of all you should understand how Local Area Netowrks (LANs) work. On a hubbed network (or an 802.11 wireless one) when a computer sends data to another one, teh hub sends that data to ALL hosts in the network while only the intended reciecver accepts it while all the others just drop it. Running a sniffer such as ethereal on a hubbed network (which sets your NIC into promiscuous mode) captures all that data that should be discarded and lets you view it. On switched networks though things are more secure. A switch only sends data to the intended reciever . To do this, hosts on a LAN use a protocol caled ARP (Address Reslution Protocol) which translated IP addresses on a LAN to MAC addresses (a supposedly unique address to each NIC, there are ways of spoffing your MAC address though). Let's say teh switch would recieve a piece of data and wants to send it to 192.168.0.2, it has to know which port to send it to (i mean a physical port on the switch, not your virtual ports), in other words on which wire to transmit it. So the host which sends the data broadcasts an ARP request like: "Who has 192.168.0.2 gimme your MAC address" to which 192.168.0.2 would respond "I'm 192.168.0.2, my MAC address in AA:BB:CC:11:22:33" (completely bogus MAC address used there for demonstrtive purposes) and then the host would send that data to the switch(along with the destination MAC address) and the switch to the intended MAC address. One flaw in ARP is that it considers ALL responses valid, so it doesn't need to send a request to get an answer. It just considers ALL answers valid. So if i were to keep sending specially crafted arp responses to a host saying "I'm 192.168.0.2, my mac address is AA:BB:CC:44:55:66" then all packets from that host destined for 192.168.0.2 would be rerouted to me. That's coz as i send these packets continuously and 192.168.0.2 only sends 1 when it's asked for it, the host recieves more packets from me before it gets to send that data so it ends up sending it to the latest MAC address for 192.168.0.2 (this is called arp poisoning). Now MITM stands for Man-In-The-Middle. An attack of this nature means turning your computer into an invisible proxy between to other computers, basically turning:
192.168.0.2<-------->192.168.0.3 into
192.168.0.2<--->my_ip_address<--->192.168.0.3
This can be accomplished by arp poisoning the 2 hosts and forwarding the recieved packets. To do a MITM between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 you'd arp poison 192.168.0.2 into thinking you're 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.3 into thinking you're 192.168.0.2 and DON'T FORGET to turn on packet forwarding coz if you don't you kill the connection between the 2 hosts. Next up i'm gonna show you how to sniff packets between 2 hosts on teh same LAN using 'arpspoof' and 'ethereal'. Arpspoof is found in the 'dsniff' package and ethereal comes with almost every Linux distro. For this example i used the auditor boot cd which can be found at remote-exploit.org . What i wanted to do was listen in on Yahoo Messenger convos. So i did teh following:
First i turned on ip forwarding 'echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward'
Then i chose my victim :), at the time i knew 192.168.0.5 was having a YahooMesenger convo so i did:
'arpspoof -t 192.168.0.5 192.168.0.99' which makes 192.168.0.5 believe that i'm 192.168.0.99, sending all packets with destination 192.168.0.99 to me. Now 192.168.0.99 is teh gateway in my LAN so it's our link with the internet therefore all packets for YahooMessenger must pass through it.
Then i did:
'arpspoof -t 192.168.0.99 192.168.0.5' which makes all packets from the internet to 192.168.0.5 pass through me (now if i dind't do this i'd only get half the conversation, what 192.168.0.5 sends,to be exact).
Now i turned on ethereal and started capturing all packets which pass through eth0 (my only NIC) and selected real-time update for the captured packets (coz i want my list of captured packets updated as tehy are captured). The following list should flood with packets (mostly ARP packets coz you send tons of them out), so it was a good idea to select the filter 'YMSG' which only shows you teh yahoo meseneger packets. A good option is to get teh 'ngrep' utility if you wanna sniff out for certain keywords. 'ngrep pass' would show me all packets containing the string 'pass' and the 'dsniff' utility which automatically looks for HTTP, FTP, POP3 etc passwords and displays them in a readable context. Another good utility found on the auditor cd id 'webspy' which redirects your netscape browser to URLs sniffed from captured packets, allowing you to surf in parallel with the victim (a cool party trick ;) ).

Decompress Zip files with Windows Shell API and C#

Introduction

With this code you can use the Windows Shell API in C# to decompress Zip files and do so without having to show the Copy Progress window shown above. Normally when you use the Shell API to decompress a Zip file it will show a Copy Progress window even when you set the options to tell Windows not to show it. To get around this, you move the Shell API code to a separate executable and then launch that executable using the .NET Process class being sure to set the process window style to 'Hidden'.
Background

Ever needed to decompress Zip files and needed a better Zip than what comes with many of the free compression libraries out there? I.e. you needed to compress folders and subfolders as well as files. Windows Zipping can compress more than just individual files. All you need is a way to programmatically get Windows to silently decompress these Zip files. Of course, you could spend $300 on one of the commercial Zip components, but it's hard to beat free if all you need is to decompress folder hierarchies.
Using the code

The following code shows how to use the Windows Shell API to decompress a Zip file. The source folder points to a Zip file. The destination folder points to an output folder. This code as is will decompress the Zip file, however it will also show the Copy Progress window. To make this code work, you will also need to set a reference to a COM library. In the References window, go to the COM tab and select the library labeled 'Microsoft Shell Controls And Automation'.

The heart of the Internet sustained its largest and most sophisticated attack ever, starting late Monday, according to officials at key online backbone organizations.

Around 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, a "distributed denial of service" (DDOS) attack struck the 13 "root servers" that provide the primary roadmap for almost all Internet communications. Despite the scale of the attack, which lasted about an hour, Internet users worldwide were largely unaffected, experts said.

FBI officials would not speculate on who might have planned or carried out the attack.

David Wray, a spokesman for the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), said the bureau is "aware of the reports and looking into it."

DDOS attacks overwhelm networks with an onslaught of data until they cannot be used. According to security experts, the incident probably was the result of multiple attacks, in which attackers concentrate the power of many computers against a single network to prevent it from operating.

"This was the largest and most complex DDOS attack ever against the root server system," said a source at one of the organizations responsible for operating the root servers.

Ordinary Internet users experienced no slowdowns or outages because of safeguards built into the Internet's architecture. A longer, more extensive attack could have seriously damaged worldwide electronic communications, the source said.

Internet Software Consortium Inc. Chairman Paul Vixie said that if more servers went down, and if the hackers sustained their hour-long strike a bit longer, Internet users around the world would have begun to see delays and failed connections.

Chris Morrow, network security engineer for UUNET, said "This is probably the most concerted attack against the Internet infrastructure that we've seen." UUNET is the service provider for two of the world's 13 root servers. A unit of WorldCom Inc., it also handles approximately half of the world's Internet traffic.

DDOS attacks are some of the most common and easiest to perpetrate, but the size and scope of Monday's strike set it apart.

Vixie said only four or five of the 13 servers were able to withstand the attack and remain available to legitimate Internet traffic throughout the strike. "It was an attack against all 13 servers, which is a little more rare than an attack against any one of us," he said.

The server Vixie operates was available throughout the attack, he said.

Internet addressing giant VeriSign Inc., which operates the most important server from an undisclosed Northern Virginia location, reported no outages.

"VeriSign expects that these sort of attacks will happen and VeriSign was prepared," company spokesman Brian O'Shaughnessy said.

Vixie said he was unwilling to compare the attack to others he has witnessed in more than two decades of involvement with Internet architecture, but said it was "the largest in recent memory."

The root servers, about 10 of which are located in the United States, serve as a sort of master directory for the Internet.

The Domain Name System (DNS), which converts complex Internet protocol addressing codes into the words and names that form e-mail and Web addresses, relies on the servers to tell computers around the world how to reach key Internet domains.

At the top of the root server hierarchy is the "A" root server, which every 12 hours generates a critical file that tells the other 12 servers what Internet domains exist and where they can be found.

VeriSign manages its servers under contracts with the Commerce Department and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers (ICANN), which manages the DNS.

One rung below the root servers in the Internet hierarchy are the servers that house Internet domains such as dot-com, dot-biz and dot-info.

The DNS is built so that eight or more of the world's 13 root servers must fail before ordinary Internet users start to see slowdowns.

"There are various kinds of attacks all the time on all sorts of infrastructure, and the basic design of the Internet is such that it is designed to withstand those attacks," said ICANN Vice President Louis Touton. "We're not aware of any users that were in any way affected.

"Obviously the prevalence of attacks does make it important to have increased focus on the need for security and stability of the Internet," he added.

Most often, the computers used in the DDOS assaults have been commandeered by hackers either manually or remotely with the help of automated software tools that scan millions of computers for known security holes. These computers often belong to unsuspecting home users.

Little can be done to insulate targets from such attacks, and some of the world's most powerful companies have been targeted in the past. In February 2000, Amazon.com, eBay, Yahoo, and a host of other big-name e-commerce sites came to a grinding halt for several hours due to DDOS attacks.

"Only the richest can defend themselves against this type of attack, and most of them can't withstand a concerted attack," said Alan Paller, research director at the SANS Institute, a nonprofit security research and training group that often works with federal investigators to track computer virus writers. Paller also was the lead expert witness at the trial of "Mafiaboy," the Canadian teenager who was ultimately convicted of the February 2000 attacks.

"The only way to stop such attacks is to fix the vulnerabilities on the machines that ultimately get taken over and used to launch them," Paller said. "There's no defense once the machines are under the attacker's control."

Vixie said he kept the server at Internet Software Consortium operating by "pushing" the flood of data far enough away from his servers that legitimate traffic could flow around the obstruction. Such clogs still affect some Internet users by gumming up Internet communications somewhere else in the network.

UUNET's Morrow said it is too early to tell what the attack bodes for the Internet in coming months. "This could be someone just messing around, but it could also be something much more serious. It's too soon to say," Morrow said.

SMS (also known as text-messaging) has grown into a very popular method of communication. It has been around in Europe and Asia since the early nineties and its use is steadily increasing in the US as well.

SMS stands for "Short Message Service" and uses mobile phones to transmit (surprise, surprise) short messages to and from mobile phones and whilst many of us might not know this, it is also possible to send SMS messages from a website or a piece of software.

There are an infinite number of reasons why you might want to use your website to send SMS. You might want to add a "send by SMS" option to your headlines, for example, or you might want to provide 24/7 support in which your technician is alerted by SMS or you might simply want to provide your viewers with Free SMS to drive traffic to your site.

Although it is also possible to send SMS via e-mail, this tutorial will teach you how to send SMS using GET and POST HTTP methods in PHP (since it's the language I know).

For those of us that many not know this, using HTTP basically means the use of forms, just like a contact form, except that these will be submitted automatically as opposed to manually.

Although this tutorial can be used for any gateway that provides access via HTTP, it is based on TM4B's SMS Gateway because A) they are the only gateway I know that have a simulation mode for tweaking your scripts, B) they don't have any set-up fees, C) their prices are low, D) they are reliable and E) I use them.

Understand the Requirements of the Gateway

Full details about connecting to TM4B are provided on their SMS API page. They basically require us to provide six mandatory pieces of data:

username: our username

password: our password

msg: our SMS message(s)

to: the recipient(s) of our message

from: our sender id

route: the route of the message (i.e. first class or business class)

And we will add a seventh, which is "sim". This identifies that our message is only a simulation and so credits won't be removed from our account and messages won't actually be delivered.

Prepare the Request

Now the actual message-delivery process is handled by the gateway. All they want us to do is pass them the details of the message(s) in the form of an HTTP request, similar to this one:

Sending the request with CURL

Previously we saw that the request could be executed by pasting it into the browser window. But what we really want is for this to take place behind the scenes. The following code does exactly that using CURL.

CURL is a very impressive library that allows you to connect and communicate to many different types of servers with many different types of protocols. You can find more info in the PHP Manual.

This code opens up a connection with the gateway, sends the SMS message(s) and collects their message IDs which are presented within the response header.

First, we initialize a new CURL session. Then we set our desired options; this includes setting CURLOPT_POST because TM4B's SMS API requires us to send multiple messages using POST. Finally we execute the call and then close the handle.

Sending the Request with Sockets
-----------------------------------------
CURL functions depend on an external library and PHP must have been compiled with the --with-curl flag. So while CURL is very flexible and useful, it may not be available with your PHP installation. If this is the case, you can still communicate with the SMS gateway using sockets.

First we layout the information we'll need to send our SMS and use it construct the HTTP header. A socket connection is established to our gateway using fsockopen. Information is sent and received in the same manner PHP would read and write to a file. After our transfer is complete we close the socket using fclose.

Conclusion

That's It! Although it took me a long time to find CURL, I think it is the best, neatest and quickest option assuming your version of PHP supports it. Furthermore, whilst both fsockopen and CURL can send thousands of messages in one go, fsockopen might give you difficulties when parsing responses for large requests as the responses are transferred in chunks.

The above took me ages; I hope it saves you time.

HACKING WITH JAVASCRIPT

This tutorial is an overview of how javascript can be used to bypass simple/advanced html forms and how it can be
used to override cookie/session authentication.

SIMPLE HTML FORMS

1. Bypassing Required Fields

Surely you have met a webpage that requires you to fill all fields in a form in order to submit it. It is
possible to bypass these types of restrictions on any webpage. If you take a look at the webpage's source and follow
it down to the form's code, you will notice the onsubmit form attribute. Hopefully by this time you have experienced
the power of javascript and you know that javascript has control over every single element in a webpage,
including forms.We can use javascript to our advantage in every page we view for we can modify, delete, or add
any element to the webpage. In this case we wish to clear the form's onsubmit attribute in order for the form to be
submitted successfully.

The onsubmit attribute generally points to a function that checks the form to have the correct format.
A function that does this may look something like this:

I will not go into great detail about how the formSubmit function works. You should know that if the
(textfield/optionfield/option/..) field is left blank, the form will not be submitted to process.php. Now comes
the moment of truth, how do we modify the form so that onsubmit returns true everytime? The way we can access the
form with javascript and do this is:

document.forms[x].onsubmit="return true;";

or

document.spamform.onsubmit="return true;";

Both of these 'queries' will allow you to submit the form free of restrictions. The secret is how to execute
this. I do this using my browser's Location bar. All you have to do is enter this text into the location bar and press
enter:

The above statement will not work because the 'query' will return a value javascript doesn't know what to do
with it so it dumps the returned value on the screen. We need a way to use this value and escape it from passing on to
javascript. I know the exact way to do this, with alert()!

You will see an alertbox with "return true;" instead of dumping this value out to the webbrowser. Once you have
executed this query you will be able to enter whatever value into whatever field in spamform.

2. Changing Fields' Values

If you have managed to change a form's onsubmit attribute to let you do whatever the fuck you want, what are
the limits? Of course now you know that you can modify the onsubmit attribute of a form from the location bar, same
goes for any attributes of any object in the page. This is how you can do it:

But of course, you already knew that. Didn't you? You can change the values of pretty much anything inside a

SQL INJECTIONS

1. Using Forms to Your Advantage

You probably already know about sql injection, my goal is to explain how vulnerable forms can be if not handled
correctly. When targeting a system, most times you will start off with 0 code to exploit. The only thing you have is
a constructed webpage to break to pieces and successfully find vulnerabilities to use to your advantage.

ACQUIRING DATABASE INFORMATION

A very logic way of acquiring system information from a website's database is by causing errors in the sql
queries. These errors can be created through search forms, dynamic links, or session cookies. Most sql injection
papers explain how dynamic links and text boxes can be used to execute sql queries but in my opinion, this vulnurability is more common in other input types (select boxes, hidden fields, checkboxes and radio buttons, and cookies!).

Mixing data types generally crashes a webpage if it's not well coded. Take for example a link
to "memberinfo.php?o_id=1". If your goal is to crash that page it would be a good idea to stick in a " or a ' in
the o_id variable. If you're lucky you will get a debug message containing the crippled sql query. After you have
all the information you need and you know what you're going after you're ready to hack the hell out of every page
that you have access to.

CHANGING FIELDS' VALUES

The first form you think of is the profile page. Most profile pages ignore a user's intellectuals and
don't mask out,for example, select boxes. A way of exploiting this vulnerability is by injecting a sql query in
the value property of the field.

If we assume that the server side sql query looks something like this:

2. Bypassing Session Cookies

OVERRIDING BASIC SESSION COOKIE AUTHENTICATION

Most of the time session handling is done with the use of cookies. The cookies tell the webpage who you are and
what you have access to and what you don't have access to. If the page does not handle session cookies correctly a hacker
might be able to change their identity to that of another user's. Cookies are stored in "window.document.cookie". With
javascript we are able to erase,edit,create cookies for any website. This task is more complicated than regular types of
attacks. I will not go into great detail about how it's done.

So If You are logged in as "John Doe" in www.ima13370h4x0r.net and your session cookie reads:

The cookie is actually serialized but you should be able to recognize "75959" as your user_id. Some of the
time you will find a website that stores data (like user_id) in cookies but does not typecast the data. This is a
serious hole in the site's code because any user is able to change their user_id to any other user or administrator
user_id.

Changing the cookie value is easy once you have declared the window.c function. First change s:5:"75959" to s:x:"ADMINID" where x is the length of the new value. So if you want to change 75959 to 1. You must change s:5:"75959" to s:1:"1" :-) Sometimes you will need to change 75959 to "13 or 1=1" in order to bypass any WHERE statements any sql session queries used to keep you logged in the website.

All you need to do is start playing the audio or video you want to capture. As the media plays, all audio and video URLs are added to the Recent Audio/Video URLs list.

Select the URL you want from the list, and click Add Selection as New Recording, a new window will open.

Here’s a workaround:
Removing this is easy. Too easy infact. Click on the start menu and select run and type this:

Navigate to the following key and delete the key

Your account is locked when someone enters an incorrect login multiple times (usually around 30). Yahoo! locks the account for "security reasons" and you are unable to access your chat names. Cool thing is, these are a piece of cake to unlock. All you need is a list of Yahoo servers to log in with. Every time you login, you are using what's called a server to access yahoo. You login with a cookie, which is sort of like an information packet or ID proving that you are who you claim to be, and the account is yours.

When people attempt to log your name in multiple times with a locking tool, all they are doing is logging in over and over with an incorrect password until your cookie expires, which means you will no longer be allowed to login. So, when you find yourself locked, what you need to do is refresh your cookie. But how can you do that when the yahoo server you were using has blocked you?

Simple, find another server. Yahoo has servers all over the place. There are more than I'd care to count. I'll include a pretty decent sized list with this tutorial. All you have to do is paste one of these servers in your browser and log in on the page you see. Unless you have been locked on that server as well, you will receive a fresh cookie and will be able to log in to messenger again.

Tons of people try to go through their email and login there to unlock an account, but a smart locker will shut down your mail server first, then cut off your chat server. Most people don't know what to do if the email is blocked, so they give up trying. That's why I don't even bother with the email method. I simply pick another server, log in, and I'm good to go. There are so many servers out there that it is impossible to lock them all. Even if they could, the lock is only for about 12 hours, and then you're back in business.

Step by step:

1. Sign into your gmail acct.
2. Click on Settings on the top right
3. Click on Forwarding and POP
4. Forward a copy of incoming mail to your target and trash Gmails copy
5. Save changes

There is no aff/confirmation email sent to the forwarding address... It just forwards.

Well now besides having the ability to sign up to thousands of spammers or reply in a forum's thread having HOT discussion with "notify me if a reply posted" selected and just forward the mail to a target it solved my problem with what to do with a few hundred thousand bouncebacks.

RapidShare also limit free users, based on their IP address, to certain download limit, and after reaching the limit, RapidShare will block your IP address. In Mozilla Firefox, go to Tools -> Options -> Connection Settings. Then select (click) Manual proxy configuration and key in proxy server information. Click OK to continue.

Obviously, once you hit the download limit, you will need to change the proxy server again. There are tools that help you to switch the proxy server automatically. In Internet Explorer, try Steganos Internet Anonym 2006 from Steganos or Hide IP from V7soft. In Firefox, use the SwitchProxy extension. Both software allow you to change the proxy server easily, with just few clicks.

Google: A Hacker's Best Friend

In the last few years a number of news articles appeared that warned of the fact that hackers (or
crackers if you will) make use of the google search engine to gain access to files they shouldn't be
allowed to see or have access to. This knowledge is nothing new to some people but personally I have
always wondered how exactly a thing like this works. VNUnet’s James Middleton wrote an article in
2001 talking about hackers using a special search string on google to find sensitive banking data:
"One such posting on a security newsgroup claimed that searching using the string 'Index of /
+banques +filetype:xls' eventually turned up sensitive Excel spreadsheets from French banks. The
same technique could also be used to find password files"[1]
Another article that appeared on wired.com told us how Adrian Lamo, a hacker who made the news
often the last couple of years, explained that google could be used to gain access to websites of big
corporations.
“For example, typing the phrase "Select a database to view" -- a common phrase in the FileMaker Pro
database interface -- into Google recently yielded about 200 links, almost all of which led to FileMaker
databases accessible online.”[2]
These articles kept on coming up in the online news. U.S. Military and Government websites were
vulnerable because admin scripts could be found using google, medical files, personal records,
everything suddenly seemed just one google search away. But these articles seemed to show up once
every half year and always talked about it as if it was something new. Another thing was, the articles
never explained how one would actually go about doing this. Almost never an example of a search
string was given. The last time I read one of these articles I decided it was time to find out for myself,
whether google actually could do all they say it can. The following is a report of my findings and a
description of some techniques and search strings one could use.
Theory
The theory behind this is actually quite simple. Either you think of certain data you would like to
acquire and try and imagine in what files this kind of data could be stored and you search for these
files directly. (Search for *.xls files for example) Or you take the more interesting approach and you try
to think of a certain software that allows you to perform certain tasks or to access certain things and
you search for critical files of this software. An example could be a content management system. You
read up on this particular content management system, check out of what files it exists and search for
those. A great example is that of the databases mentioned above, where you know the string “view
database” is used on pages that shouldn’t be accessible to you and you then search for pages
containing that string, or you check the software and notice that the option to view a database is linked
on a webpage within this software called “viewdbase.htm” and you search for “viewdbase.htm”
The most important thing is to have a clear goal, to know what it is you want to find. Then search for
these specific files or trademarks that these files have.
Google Search Options
Specific file types: *.xls, *.doc, *.pdf *.ps *.ppt *.rtf
Google allows you to search for specific file types, so instead of getting html-files as a result (websites)
you get Microsoft excel files for example. The search string you would use would be this:
Filetype:xls (for excel files) or filetype:doc for word files.
But maybe more interesting would be searching for *.db files and *.mdb files. Google by the way
doesn’t tell you you can search for *.db and *mdb files. I wonder what other file types one can search
for. Things that come to mind are *.cfg files or *.pwd files, *.dat files, stuff like that. Try and think of
something that might get you some interesting results.
Inurl
Another useful search option is the inurl: option which allows one to search for a certain word one
would want to be in the url. This gives you the opportunity to search for specific directories/folders,
especially in combination with the “index of” option, about which I will talk later on.
An example would be inurl:admin which would give you results of website urls that have the word
“admin” in the url.
Index of
The index of option is another option that isn’t especially thought of by the creators of google, but
comes in very handy. If you use the “index of” string you will find directory listings of specific folders on
servers. An example could be:
‘index of” admin or index.of.admin
which would get you many directory listings of admin folders. (don’t forget to use the quotes in this
case since you are looking for the entire “index of” string, not just for “index” and “of”)
Site
The site option allows you to come up with results that only belong to a certain domain name
extension or to a specific site. For example one could search for .com sites or .box.sk sites or .nl sites,
but also for results from just one site, but more interesting might be to search for specific military or
government websites. An example of a search string would be:
Site:mil or site:gov
Site:neworder.box.sk “board”
Intitle
Intitle is another nice option. It allows you to search for html files that have a certain word or words in
the title. The format would be intitle:wordhere. You could check out what words appear in the title of
some online control panel or content management system and then search google for this word with
the intitle option, to find these control panel pages.
Link
The Link option allows you to check which sites link to a specific site. As described in Hacking
Exposed Third Edition, this could be useful:
These search engines provide a handy facility that allows you to search for all sites that have links
back to the target organization’s domain. This may not seem significant at first but let’s explore the
implications. Suppose someone in an organization decides to put up a rogue website at home or on
the target network’s site.“”[4]
Combining search options
The above mentioned search options might or might not be known to you, but even though they can
amount to some interesting results, it’s a fact that when you start combining them, that’s when
google’s magic starts to show. For example, one could try this search string:
inurl:nasa.gov filetype:xls "restricted" or this one: site:mil filetype:xls "password" or maybe
site:mil “index of” admin
(I’m just producing these from the top of my head, I don’t know whether they’d result in anything
interesting, that’s where you come in. You got to find a search string that gets the results you want.)
Examples; The Good Stuff
Specific file types: *.xls, *.doc, *.pdf *.ps *.ppt *.rtf
To start out simple, you can try and search directly for files that you believe might hold interesting
information. The obvious choices for me were things like:
Password, passwords, pwd, account, accounts, userid, uid, login, logins, secret, secrets, all followed
by either *.doc or *.xls or *.db
This led me to quite some interesting results, especially with the *.db option but I actually also found
some passwords.doc files, containing working passwords.

It was 1975 and Ann Iverson was 15 years old, unmarried and newly arrived with her family from Connecticut when she gave birth in Hampton to her first child. Allen Iverson was nicknamed Bubbachuck, a combination of two uncles’ names. Iverson said his biological father rarely was in the picture during his childhood. "You know, he called me a little bit this year (1996)," Iverson said. "But, I mean, he can’t take the place of Michael Freeman. Nobody ever will. That’s who I feel is my father. "Freeman said he was 18 and Bubbachuck just a few months old when he and Ann Iverson began living together in 1975. Freeman said he later became a welder for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., and the father of Allen’s sisters, Brandy and Iiesha. Ann Iverson held various jobs after graduating from high school - one on an assembly line at Avon Fashions, a clothes packaging and distribution factory where she worked from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. At times she was unemployed. But Allen Iverson said he never has forgotten his mother’s efforts. "She took care of me for 20 years," he said. "I want to just do the same thing for her. "Freeman said he and Ann Iverson began living apart when Allen was in junior high school. Freeman said he helped support the family until he lost his job after a car accident. "Then things got tough," he said. "There were times when Allen never knew where his next meal was going to be," said Mike Bailey, Iverson’s basketball coach at Bethel High. "Here’s a kid who couldn’t take a bath because he had no running water because it had been turned off. Sometimes you had to go to five, six different places to find him," Bailey said. "You couldn’t phone some places because there were no phones. "My mom struggled. My dad struggled. Everybody in my family struggled," Iverson said recently. "It was nothing new, the lights being cut off or anything. I mean, it was something I had been dealing with my whole life. "Unemployed, Freeman said he "went the wrong way. I did what I had to do" to support the family. "And some things, you know, I had to go against the law to do. "In February 1991, midway through Iverson’s ninth grade year, Freeman was convicted in Newport News, Va., of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and given a 10 year prison sentence with five years suspended. "When I left my son to go to prison I told him he’s got to hold down the fort until I got home," Freeman said. Iverson was 15. "I said, basketball is your family’s way out. "Freeman was paroled in December 1992. But he was arrested in Hampton in March 1994 on charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm. He was indicted for possession of cocaine; he pleaded guilty and was given a suspended sentence. In November 1994, the suspended sentence he received in 1991 was revoked and he was returned to prison. Freeman was paroled again in January. "I feel all the jail time he did was for us," Iverson said. "He couldn’t stand to look at us living like that. So he went out and did what he had to do."

High school While Iverson was leading Bethel to state football and basketball titles during his junior year, his coaches became increasingly concerned about the company and late night hours he was keeping. One night in January 1993, Iverson was at a party in a hotel where a man was shot to death. On Valentine’s Day in 1993, Iverson and friends involved in a gang fight at a Hampton, Virginia, Bowling Alley. Iverson’s crowd was loud and had to be asked to quiet down several times, and eventually something of a shouting duel began with another group of youths. A huge fight erupted, pitting the local white kids against the blacks. It started as an argument between Iverson and a white youth. Iverson insists he left when trouble started. Another witness claimed to have seen him hit a white woman in the head with a chair. Iverson was tried as an adult, and the trial became a media circus. Iverson and three blacks were the only ones arrested and his celebrity bore on the case. Iverson was convicted of maiming by mob, and sentenced to five years in prison. Ann Iverson, meanwhile, began optimistically mapping out her 18-year-old son’s future. On Oct. 10, 1993 she visited Allen in prison, where he signed an affidavit giving her power of attorney. "My name is Allen Iverson," the affidavit read. "I am in need for my mother to conduct any and all of my affairs and make any and all decisions for me . "One of Ann Iverson’s decisions was to visit Thompson in early December 1993. "She was the reason why I helped her child," Thompson said. Several weeks later, Virginia’s governor at the time, L. Douglas Wilder, granted conditional clemency to Iverson, citing sufficient doubt about his guilt. Iverson was free after four months at the City Farm. In spring 1994, Thompson visited Iverson at Hampton’s Richard M. Milburn High, which caters to students who have dropped out of school or are at risk of doing so. "I never discussed that bowling alley incident:, never asked him, What really happened?’ " Thompson said. "I told him I did not want to talk about whether the judge was fair or not."

College At Georgetown, Iverson majored in fine arts. Iverson said he has an interest in drawing, and friends say he is an outstanding caricaturist. "I want to continue to draw," Iverson said. "Every talent God gave me, I want to use it. I can’t play basketball forever. "But his primary mission at Georgetown seemed to be improving his basketball skills. Recalling his first day on campus, Iverson said, "Alonzo Mourning an NBA star and ex-Hoya was in the gym talking to Coach Thompson. I mean, I was excited even before I got to Georgetown. But once I got there I was even more excited. All I wanted to do was play basketball. "During his two seasons with the Hoyas, Iverson averaged 23 points a game and twice was named Big East Conference defensive player of the year. From his first game, the 6 foot, 165 pound Iverson was an electrifying presence on the court. He had astonishing speed while dribbling and explosive jumping ability. Thompson allowed and sometimes even asked Iverson to dominate games as few Georgetown guards have. Some Thompson watchers were surprised by the offensive freedom he gave Iverson. "You teach according to the student," Thompson explained. "Allen had talent - exceptional talent. So he was permitted to have more leeway. You don’t crush creativity. "Deciding to Leave Evidently, Iverson also had a knack for blocking out distractions, which seemed to be everywhere. At some games, he was taunted by opposing fans who yelled "jailbird, jailbird" or waved bowling pins in the air. In the midst of his freshman season, Ann Iverson used her power of attorney to file suit - in Allen’s name - against the lawyer who had defended him free of charge in the bowling alley case, Herbert V. Kelley Sr. The lawsuit alleged that Kelley had been negligent and that Iverson would suffer "mortification, shame, vilification and financial loss" because of the guilty verdict. The complaint sought $100 million in damages. Then there was Freeman’s incarceration. While Iverson was settling into his comfortable dormitory suite at Copley Hall to begin his sophomore year last fall, his "dad" was living just a few miles a way at the Fairfax County Correctional Field Unit, one of several state facilities in which he was housed. Iverson said he didn’t visit Freeman in Fairfax because "I’d visited him in another prison and it just hurt me so much. I’d given him the tennis shoes off my feet because the sneakers he had, they were so bad, all messed up. So I went home barefooted that day. "As the season progressed, and reporters began wondering if Bubbachuck would become the first Georgetown player to enter the NBA draft before his senior year, Thompson became increasingly aware of the hardships in Iverson’s life. In early April, shortly after the Hoyas were eliminated from the NCAA tournament, Thompson invited Iverson and his mother to a meeting at McDonough. The subject should Iverson leave school to turn pro? Two of Thompson’s most trusted confidants - Falk, his Washington based agent, and Mary Fenlon, his long-time aide decamp, also were invited.Falk has provided free counsel to Thompson’s athletes for more than 15 years and has represented virtually every Hoya who has played in the NBA, including Mourning, Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo. "John makes no bones of the fact he recommends us to his players," said Falk, who also represents Michael Jordan, Iverson’s childhood hero. Falk said he "very, very aggressively" advised Iverson to stay in school because he could earn more money, particularly from endorsement contracts, after another year of TV exposure. But in that meeting and in another in his office on upper Wisconsin Avenue, Falk said he heard some compelling reasons why Iverson should turn pro. "Allen told me his mother’s living conditions were deplorable," Falk said. "There was a sewage problem in her house. Sewage was seeping through the floor and Allen said there was a stench that was just unimaginable. "The condition of younger sister Iiesha also had worsened; she had just suffered another seizure. "His sister needed a brain specialist," Falk said. Meanwhile, Freeman had been paroled and was unemployed. "Allen didn’t feel that staying in school was a viable option," Falk said. Thompson said outside influences also were competing for Iverson’s attention this spring. Can't Log On to Windows XP?

If that’s your only problem, then you probably have nothing to worry about. As long as you have your Windows XP CD, you can get back into your system using a simple but effective method made possible by a little known access hole in Windows XP.

ERD is an excellent multi purpose product, but you should know it is not a necessary one if you have a healthy system and your sole problem is the inability to logon to Windows due to a forgotten password. Not necessary because you can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair. Here’s how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process included for newbie’s.

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.

6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL , COMPMGMT.MSC and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.

12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

I tested the above on Windows XP Pro with and without SP1 and also used this method in a real situation where someone could not remember their password and it worked like a charm to fix the problem. This security hole allows access to more than just user accounts. You can also access the Registry and Policy Editor, for example. And its gui access with mouse control. Of course, a Product Key will be needed to continue with the Repair after making the changes, but for anyone intent on gaining access to your system, this would be no problem.

And in case you are wondering, NO, you cannot cancel install after making the changes and expect to logon with your new password.

Canceling will just result in Setup resuming at boot up and your changes will be lost.

Ok, now that your logon problem is fixed, you should make a point to prevent it from ever happening again by creating a Password Reset Disk. This is a floppy disk you can use in the event you ever forget your log on password. It allows you to set a new password.

Here's how to create one if your computer is NOT on a domain:

Go to the Control Panel and open up User Accounts.
Choose your account (under Pick An Account to Change) and under Related Tasks, click "Prevent a forgotten password".
This will initiate a wizard.
Click Next and then insert a blank formatted floppy disk into your A: drive.
Click Next and enter your logon password in the password box.
Click Next to begin the creation of your Password disk.
Once completed, label and save the disk to a safe place

How to Log on to your PC Using Your Password Reset Disk

Start your computer and at the logon screen, click your user name and leave the password box blank or just type in anything. This will bring up a Logon Failure box and you will then see the option to use your Password Reset disk to create a new password. Click it which will initiate the Password Reset wizard. Insert your password reset disk into your floppy drive and follow the wizard which will let you choose a new password to use for your account.

Note: If your computer is part of a domain, the procedure for creating a password disk is different. plez google it for more information………….u will come across many tools & utilities……….search it…… work it out ….think it…… exploit it ………. feel the codes…. dream it……..

Throughout this unit I have noticed a common theme, in that people seem to be linking the concept of "community" with a need for physical reality. There is no such need. Thousands of communities existed even before the Internet where there was no actual physical meeting place for the participants - they simply shared a common interest.

Sure, in Counter-Strike you aren't fighting in a real army and in World of Warcraft you aren't in a real place - We are all well aware of this, that doesn't lessen the groups that make up these online games as a community as long as they conform to a dictionary definition. The group of people who share the common interest of playing paintball aren't in a real army either, but that doesn't make their shared experience and community any less real - just different.

An interacting population of various kinds of individuals in a common location.

or

a body of persons of common interests scattered through a larger society (such as the academic community).

This is by no means an exhaustive list of definitions, but they are, I feel, the most important ones when considering this topic.

Can you argue that the population of an MMORPG such as World of Warcraft is not interacting in a common location? Sure, it isn't a physical location but it still is a location. When people ask you "Hey where did you find that information?" you say "On the Internet", you don't say "It came from this fake place that doesn't exist". Despite the lack of physicallity it is still a location.

Secondly, a common interest is obviously shared in online games.

Thirdly, even if the Internet disappeared tomorrow for a week and there was no game servers to log onto there would still be a "World of Warcraft Community": Individuals scattered throughout the wider community who play the game. Even communities from players for individual servers.

I'll finish off with an example from my own gaming experience last night.

I was on the World of Warcraft server I play on in the city of Ironforge. This is the place where most members of the Alliance races go when looking for a group to adventure with since it has the most convenient services all gathered together. It is sort of a hub for all things Alliance.

Anyway, I saw someone advertising that they needed more people for a "raid" on a place called "Stratholme", it is a very dangerous area full of powerful enemies.

I said to them "If you need a hunter I will go with you" and I was quickly invited to join.

Once I was in the party there was some discussion about what other sorts of players we needed. Some said we needed another warrior, some wanted a mage or a warlock for spells. A few names of players interested in coming were put to the group, some of whom one or more of the various members objected to - "No, don't take Apok, he is too low level", "No, Don't take Mythrandir, he is a Ninja looter" (a ninja looter is someone who quickly snatches up loot which is useless for a character of his own class and simply wants to sell it for gold when another group member would have really liked to use it).

Eventually we got a party together that everyone was satisfied with, we all headed off to the area, where we planned our assault, laid down the law for the rules about the distribution of any loot and headed in.

A couple of hours later our raid was over. A few of the other members complimented me on my skill as a Hunter and we exchanged some negative words about 2 or 3 of the 10 members of the group who hadn't proven very good team-players and would likely find themselves excluded from future ventures.

Now, yes I know none of that is physically real, but can anyone argue that a group of people are having experiences and interacting? Can anyone argue against the idea that there is a common interest?

You don't have to believe that Stratholme, Ironforge, or Night-Elf Hunters really exist in the physical world to accept that a group of people are interacting here.

It is the interaction that is important, not the physical existence of the meeting place.

I would have thought that since this unit is called "virtual communities" that is the whole point.

CAUSE

The NET SEND command uses the Messenger service to send messages on the network. This problem occurs because the Messenger service is disabled. By default, the Messenger service is disabled on computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP SP2.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the Startup type of the Messenger service to Automatic, and then start the Messenger service. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Open Windows Explorer.
2.	In the left pane, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
3.	In the Computer Management window, expand Services and Applications in the left pane, and then click Services.
4.	In the right pane, double-click Messenger.
5.	In the Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box, click the General tab.
6.	On the General tab, select Automatic from the Startup type list, and then click Apply.
7.	Under Service status, click Start, and then click OK.

For example, limiting the amount of memory NT sees can be useful for stressing memory loads, and limiting the number of processors for testing scalability. Causes the standard x86 multiprocessor HAL (Halmps.dll) to configure itself for a level-sensitive system clock rather then an edge-triggered clock. Level-sensitive and edge-triggered are terms used to describe hardware interrupt types.

/CMDCONS

Passed when booting with into the Recovery Console (described later in this chapter).

/CRASHDEBUG

Causes the kernel debugger to be loaded when the system boots, but to remain inactive unless a crash occurs. This allows the serial port that the kernel debugger would use to be available for use by the system until the system crashes (vs. /DEBUG, which causes the kernel debugger to use the serial port for the life of the system session).

/DEBUG

Enables kernel-mode debugging.

/DEBUGPORT=

Enables kernel-mode debugging and specifies an override for the default serial (usually COM2 on systems with at least two serial ports) to which a remote kernel-debugger host is connected. Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 also support debugging through accept IEEE 1394 ports. Examples: /DEBUGPORT=COM2, /DEBUGPORT=1394.

/EXECUTE

This option disables no-execute protection. See the /NOEXECUTE switch for more information.

/FASTDETECT

Default boot option for Windows. Replaces the Windows NT 4 switch /NOSERIALMICE. The reason the qualifier exists (vs. just having NTDETECT perform this operation by default) is so that NTDETECT can support booting Windows NT 4. Windows Plug and Play device drivers perform detection of parallel and serial devices, but Windows NT 4 expects NTDETECT to perform the detection. Thus, specifying /FASTDETECT causes NTDETECT to skip parallel and serial device enumeration (actions that are not required when booting Windows), whereas omitting the switch causes NTDETECT to perform this enumeration (which is required for booting Windows NT 4).

/INTAFFINITY

Directs the standard x86 multiprocessor HAL (Halmps.dll) to set interrupt affinities such that only the highest numbered processor will receive interrupts. Without the switch, the HAL defaults to its normal behavior of letting all processors receive interrupts.

/KERNEL=
/HAL=

Enable you to override Ntldr's default filename for the kernel image (Ntoskrnl.exe) and/or the HAL (Hal.dll). These options are useful for alternating between a checked kernel environment and a free (retail) kernel environment or even to manually select a different HAL. If you want to boot a checked environment that consists solely of the checked kernel and HAL, which is typically all that is needed to test drivers, follow these steps on a system installed with the free build:

· Copy the checked versions of the kernel images from the checked build CD to your WindowsSystem32 directory, giving the images different names than the default. For example, if you're on a uniprocessor, copy Ntoskrnl.exe to Ntoschk.exe and Ntkrnlpa.exe to Ntoschkpa.exe. If you're on a multiprocessor, copy Ntkrnlmp.exe to Ntoschk.exe and Ntkrpamp.exe to Ntoschkpa.exe. The kernel filename must be an 8.3-style short name.

· Copy the checked version of the appropriate HAL needed for your system from I386Driver.cab on the checked build CD to your WindowsSystem32 directory, naming it Halchk.dll. To determine which HAL to copy, open WindowsRepairSetup.log and search for Hal.dll; you'll find a line like WINDOWSsystem32 hal.dll="halacpi.dll","1d8a1". The name immediately to the right of the equals sign is the name of the HAL you should copy. The HAL filename must be an 8.3-style short name.

· Make a copy of the default line in the system's Boot.ini file.

· In the string description of the boot selection, add something that indicates that the new selection will be for a checked build environment (for example, “Windows XP Professional Checked”).

· Add the following to the end of the new selection's line: /KERNEL=NTOSCHK.EXE /HAL= HALCHK.DLL

Now when the selection menu appears during the boot process you can select the new entry to boot a checked environment or select the entry you were using to boot the free build.

/LASTKNOWNGOOD

Causes the system to boot as if the LastKnownGood boot option was selected.

/MAXMEM=

Limits Windows to ignore (not use) physical memory beyond the amount indicated. The number is interpreted in megabytes. Example: /MAXMEM=32 would limit the system to using the first 32 MB of physical memory even if more were present.

/MAXPROCSPERCLUSTER=

For the standard x86 multiprocessor HAL (Halmps.dll), forces cluster-mode Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (APIC) addressing (not supported on systems with an 82489DX external APIC interrupt controller).

/MININT

This option is used by Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment) and causes the Configuration Manager to load the Registry SYSTEM hive as a volatile hive such that changes made to it in memory are not saved back to the hive image.

/NODEBUG

Prevents kernel-mode debugging from being initialized. Overrides the specification of any of the three debug-related switches, /DEBUG, /DEBUGPORT, and /BAUDRATE.

/NOEXECUTE

This option is only available on 32-bit versions of Windows when running on processors supporting no-execute protection. It enables no-execute protection (also known as Data Execution Protection - DEP), which results in the Memory Manager marking pages containing data as no-execute so that they cannot be executed as code. This can be useful for preventing malicious code from exploiting buffer overflow bugs with unexpected program input in order to execute arbitrary code. No-execute protection is always enabled on 64-bit versions of Windows on processors that support no-execute protection. There are several options you can specify with this switch:

· /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN Enables DEP for core system images and those specified in the DEP configuration dialog.

· /NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT Enables DEP for all images except those specified in the DEP configuration dialog.

· /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSON Enables DEP on all images.

· /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF Disables DEP.

/NOGUIBOOT

Instructs Windows not to initialize the VGA video driver responsible for presenting bitmapped graphics during the boot process. The driver is used to display boot progress information, so disabling it will disable the ability of Windows to show this information.

/NOLOWMEM

Requires that the /PAE switch be present and that the system have more than 4 GB of physical memory. If these conditions are met, the PAE-enabled version of the Windows kernel, Ntkrnlpa.exe, won't use the first 4 GB of physical memory. Instead, it will load all applications and device drivers, and allocate all memory pools, from above that boundary. This switch is useful only to test device driver compatibility with large memory systems.

/NOPAE

Forces Ntldr to load the non-Physical Address Extension (PAE) version of the Windows kernel, even if the system is detected as supporting x86 PAEs and has more than 4 GB of physical memory.

/NOSERIALMICE=[COMx | COMx,y,z...]

Obsolete Windows NT 4 qualifier—replaced by the absence of the /FASTDETECT switch. Disables serial mouse detection of the specified COM ports. This switch was used if you had a device other than a mouse attached to a serial port during the startup sequence. Using /NOSERIALMICE without specifying a COM port disables serial mouse detection on all COM ports. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q131976 for more information.

/NUMPROC=

Specifies the number of CPUs that can be used on a multiprocessor system. Example: /NUMPROC=2 on a four-way system will prevent Windows from using two of the four processors.

/ONECPU

Causes Windows to use only one CPU on a multiprocessor system.

/PAE

Causes Ntldr to load Ntkrnlpa.exe, which is the version of the x86 kernel that is able to take advantage of x86 PAEs. The PAE version of the kernel presents 64-bit physical addresses to device drivers, so this switch is helpful for testing device driver support for large memory systems.

/PCILOCK

Stops Windows from dynamically assigning IO/IRQ resources to PCI devices and leaves the devices configured by the BIOS. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q148501 for more information.

/RDPATH=

Specifies the path to a System Disk Image (SDI) file, which can be on the network, that the system will use to boot from. Often used in conjunction with the /RDIMAGEOFFSET= flag to indicate to NTLDR where in the file the system image starts.

/REDIRECT

Introduced with Windows XP. Used to cause Windows to enable Emergency Management Services (EMS) that reports boot information and accepts system management commands through a serial port. Specify serial port and baudrate used in conjunction with EMS with redirect= and redirectbaudrate= lines in the [boot loader] section of the Boot.ini file.

/SAFEBOOT:

Specifies options for a safe boot. You should never have to specify this option manually, since Ntldr specifies it for you when you use the F8 menu to perform a safe boot. (A safe boot is a boot in which Windows only loads drivers and services that are specified by name or group under the Minimal or Network registry keys under HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSafeBoot.) Following the colon in the option you must specify one of three additional switches: MINIMAL, NETWORK, or DSREPAIR. The MINIMAL and NETWORK flags correspond to safe boot with no network and safe boot with network support, respectively. The DSREPAIR (Directory Services Repair) switch causes Windows to boot into a mode in which it restores the Active Directory directory service from a backup medium you present. An additional option you can append is (ALTERNATESHELL), which tells Windows to use the program specified by the HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSet SafeBootAlternateShell value as the graphical shell rather than to use the default, which is Windows Explorer.

/SCSIORDINAL:

Directs Windows to the SCSI ID of the controller. (Adding a new SCSI device to a system with an on-board SCSI controller can cause the controller's SCSI ID to change.) See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q103625 for more information.

/SDIBOOT=

Used in Windows XP Embedded systems to have Windows boot from a RAM disk image stored in the specified System Disk Image (SDI) file.

/SOS

Causes Windows to list the device drivers marked to load at boot time and then to display the system version number (including the build number), amount of physical memory, and number of processors.

/TIMERES=

Sets the resolution of the system timer on the standard x86 multiprocessor HAL (Halmps.dll). The argument is a number interpreted in hundreds of nanoseconds, but the rate is set to the closest resolution the HAL supports that isn't larger than the one requested. The HAL supports the following resolutions:

The default resolution is 7.8 ms. The system timer resolution affects the resolution of waitable timers. Example: /TIMERES=21000 would set the timer to a resolution of 2.0 ms.

/USERVA=

This switch is only supported on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Like the /3GB switch, this switch gives applications a larger address space. Specify the amount in MB between 2048 and 3072. This switch has the same application requirements as the /3GB switch and requires that the /3GB switch be present. Applies to 32-bit systems only.

/WIN95

Directs Ntldr to boot the Consumer Windows boot sector stored in Bootsect.w40. This switch is pertinent only on a triple-boot system that has MS-DOS, Consumer Windows, and Windows installed. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q157992 for more information.

/WIN95DOS

Directs Ntldr to boot the MS-DOS boot sector stored in Bootsect.dos. This switch is pertinent only on a triple-boot system that has MS-DOS, Consumer Windows, and Windows installed. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q157992 for more information.

/YEAR=

Instructs the Windows core time function to ignore the year that the computer's real-time clock reports and instead use the one indicated. Thus, the year used in the switch affects every piece of software on the system, including the Windows kernel. Example: /YEAR=2001. (This switch was created to assist in Y2K testing.)

this screws up taskmanager,regedit and system config so you cant do anything with them. More discreet than disableing them completely.

What is a Rootkit?

The term rootkit is used to describe the mechanisms and techniques whereby malware, including viruses, spyware, and trojans, attempt to hide their presence from spyware blockers, antivirus, and system management utilities. There are several rootkit classifications depending on whether the malware survives reboot and whether it executes in user mode or kernel mode.

Persistent Rootkits

A persistent rootkit is one associated with malware that activates each time the system boots. Because such malware contain code that must be executed automatically each system start or when a user logs in, they must store code in a persistent store, such as the Registry or file system, and configure a method by which the code executes without user intervention.

Memory-Based Rootkits

Memory-based rootkits are malware that has no persistent code and therefore does not survive a reboot.

User-mode Rootkits

There are many methods by which rootkits attempt to evade detection. For example, a user-mode rootkit might intercept all calls to the Windows FindFirstFile/FindNextFile APIs, which are used by file system exploration utilities, including Explorer and the command prompt to enumerate the contents of file system directories. When an application performs a directory listing that would otherwise return results that contain entries identifying the files associated with the rootkit, the rootkit intercepts and modifies the output to remove the entries.

The Windows native API serves as the interface between user-mode clients and kernel-mode services and more sophisticated user-mode rootkits intercept file system, Registry, and process enumeration functions of the Native API. This prevents their detection by scanners that compare the results of a Windows API enumeration with that returned by a native API enumeration.

Kernel-mode Rootkits

Kernel-mode rootkits can be even more powerful since, not only can they intercept the native API in kernel-mode, but they can also directly manipulate kernel-mode data structures. A common technique for hiding the presence of a malware process is to remove the process from the kernel's list of active processes. Since process management APIs rely on the contents of the list, the malware process will not display in process management tools like Task Manager or Process Explorer.

How RootkitRevealer Works

Since persistent rootkits work by changing API results so that a system view using APIs differs from the actual view in storage, RootkitRevealer compares the results of a system scan at the highest level with that at the lowest level. The highest level is the Windows API and the lowest level is the raw contents of a file system volume or Registry hive (a hive file is the Registry's on-disk storage format). Thus, rootkits, whether user mode or kernel mode, that manipulate the Windows API or native API to remove their presence from a directory listing, for example, will be seen by RootkitRevealer as a discrepancy between the information returned by the Windows API and that seen in the raw scan of a FAT or NTFS volume's file system structures.

Can a Rootkit hide from RootkitRevealer?

It is theoretically possible for a rootkit to hide from RootkitRevealer. Doing so would require intercepting RootkitRevealer's reads of Registry hive data or file system data and changing the contents of the data such that the rootkit's Registry data or files are not present. However, this would require a level of sophistication not seen in rootkits to date. Changes to the data would require both an intimate knowledge of the NTFS, FAT and Registry hive formats, plus the ability to change data structures such that they hide the rootkit, but do not cause inconsistent or invalid structures or side-effect discrepancies that would be flagged by RootkitRevealer.

Is there a sure-fire way to know of a rootkit's presence?

In general, not from within a running system. A kernel-mode rootkit can control any aspect of a system's behavior so information returned by any API, including the raw reads of Registry hive and file system data performed by RootkitRevealer can be compromised. While comparing an on-line scan of a system and an off-line scan from a secure environment such as a boot into an CD-based operating system installation is more reliable, rootkits can target such tools to evade detection by even them.

The bottom line is that there will never be a universal rootkit scanner, but the most powerful scanners will be on-line/off-line comparison scanners that integrate with antivirus.
